Boy Scouts

In 1965, Reverend Gordon Stenning, the then-Rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and an Eagle Scout himself, encouraged Ed Judge, a veteran of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, to form a Boy Scout Troop. With St. Mary’s as their Chartering Organization, Troop 82 was created on January 1st, 1966. For over 47 years, Troop 82 has fostered the aims and methods of Scouting. Today, St. Mary’s Scouting program includes both Cub Scout Pack 82 for boys in 1st to 5th grade and Troop 82, for boys 11 to 18. Ours is one of the largest Scout organizations in Rhode Island. The Cub and Boy Scouts meet weekly in the Parish House.

Over the years our Scouts have done many many service projects for our community and St. Mary’s. They have participated in National Scouting Jamborees, high adventure treks and yearly visits to Camp Yawgoog summer camp. We are particularly proud of the 123 young men who have achieved the rank of Eagle, Scouting’s highest. Our Scouts fully believe in being a boy run troop with the guidance of dedicated and caring adults. Not only are we non discriminatory we are an inclusive Troop for boys of all abilities and disabilities. Fully equipped for any camping adventure, St. Mary’s even has its own camp in the back fields.
